1.18 How to Deal with a Chemical Spill?

Major Spills
This would be where the spill is too big to clean up with a normal mop and bucket and/or it has run out of the storage area.

Use a chemical spill kit to contain the spill in a confined area. Obtain the Safety Data Sheet for the product and follow the instructions given under the heading “6 – Accidental Release Measures”

Minor Spills
If a minor spill occurs, contain it and mop it up.

If it is a water-based product that is allowed to be dumped into the sewer, then it can be poured into the sewer with the tap running to dilute the product. If it is not allowed in the sewer, consult the SDS for further advice.

Note: Solvent-based chemicals must not be poured down the sewer.
